Alicia Gornowski was born on September 9th 1925 in Warsaw, Poland. In 1933 her sister was murdered. When the Nazis arrived Alicia was separated from her family and she lived for some time in the Warsaw Ghetto.  She escaped from the ghetto and  went into hiding in an orphanage where she was safe throughout the war. In 1946 she came to Britain thanks to the help of a 20 year old British Rabbi – Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld who had travelled to Austria to rescue orphaned children, rabbis and others. Ailicia was one of 110 kids brought back to the UK.  Alicia’s parents Celina and Malricy and all her family perished in the Holocaust. The photo Alicia is holding is one of just two photos she has of her late mother.  Alicia and her late husband Saweliusz were married for 52 years and named their daughter after Alicia’s mother. For most of life she was a secretary and dressmaker. Alicia has a grandson named Ariel.
