Freddie Knoller was born in Vienna on April 17th 1921. Initially he escaped the Nazis by going to Belgium but was interned when the Nazis invaded. On two occasions he escaped capture, lived in Paris and joined the French Resistance. He was betrayed, arrested, tortured and eventually sent to Auschwitz. He was one of 100 people squeezed into a cattle wagon, without food or water for three days. Towards the end of the war the SS forced Freddie on a ‘death march’ to Dora Nordhausen camp in Germany. He was liberated by the British Army in Bergen Belsen. In 1947 he travelled to Baltimore where he met his wife Freda. They moved to the UK in 1952 and had two daughters, Marcia and Susie. Freddie used to travel to Auschwitz to meet with students on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Day) every year.
